The Glenlivet Distillery

This is where it all started. The Glenlivet was founded by George Smith in 1824 and was the first legal distillery in the Highlands.

During the preceding decades the principle occupation for inhabitants of Glenlivet had been illegally distilling and smuggling whisky. They felt betrayed by George Smith's involvment with The Glenlivet and he is said to have carried a pair of loaded pistols for the rest of his life for his own protection.

The Glenlivet Distillery sits on a ridge above the Livet Packhorse Bridge whilst a short distance downstream lies Drumin Castle – The Lair of the Wolf of Badenoch.
